Interview with Mr. Can Gursu, from GUR-IS

During Plast Eurasia 2019 we had the great opportunity to interview with Mr. Can Gursu, Sales Manager at GUR-IS, this is our second time we have the chance to interview, the first time was in Plastic and Rubber Indonesia 2018, there we had talked about the company's Asian market plans. This time we asked their progress in Asia, as well as discussed current issues in bag making machine industry, Turkish economy, plastic reduction, and the future outlook of the company and the industry.

GUR-IS, founded in 1988, is a successful plastic and paper bag making company not only operates in the Turkish market but also have customers and representatives in West, East, North and South Europe; North, South and West Africa; Middle-East, Central Asia and Far-East; North, Central, and South America.

Mr. Gursu defines, Plasteurasia is a prestige trade fair for GUR-IS, therefore the company attends every year with a huge booth and exhibits various machines depends on the current market conditions and customer demands. However, he thinks that the trade fair must be better advertised to attract more international exhibitors and visitors. The company currently makes its sales in the Turkish market because it is already well known, but also implements its 75% marketing effort for foreign markets and plans to focus mostly on the Far East and South East Asia markets in the near future.

Mr. Gursu mentions, "Turkish economy is passing a bad stage currently". The growth rate decreased to 5%, it was around 10% previously. He believes if there is no political instability in the near future, the economy will reach previous growth rate. Despite of the decline, the machine industry is constantly growing in Turkey with a 10% rate, and supports the economy during these bad times.

Plastic Reduction and Bag Making Machine Industry

During the interview, we asked about the Turkish bag making machinery industry’s position in the global markets. Mr. Gursu says Turkish manufacturers including GUR-IS are between Asian and European manufacturers in terms of quality and price balance, moreover closer to Europe as quality and closer to Asian markets as price. He thinks Taiwanese manufacturers have a good potential for the innovation on machines to increase quality, production speed and meet customer demands but it seems like they do not use it at the moment. If it goes like this, Turkish bag making machine manufacturers will reach the same market share with Taiwanese manufacturers and will be able to compete them. German French and Italian machinery in Europe are qualitative and fast, but also expensive. Thus, Eastern European markets still have customer potential for the company.

The current plastic reduction actions around the world deeply affected bag making machine industry, Mr. Gursu stated. Such as t-shirt bag manufacturing decreased in the world, there is around 50% decrease in Turkey. Other type of bags manufacturing did not affected that much. He says, currently there is no efficient and cheaper alternative to plastics in many areas. For instance, using alternative materials in agricultural fields is neither safe nor efficient. But, the type of plastic bags that can be substituted with paper, would be an alternative. But, it does not cover all fields and using paper is also harmful for the environment due to consuming natural resources. As a conclusion and best solution, people must be educated and given suitable infrastructure to use plastics consciously and to recycle.

On the other hand, the company invests in R&D to be competitive in the new market conditions. Currently, they are able to manufacture machines for PLA and biodegradable materials. These materials are more heat-sensitive comparing with such as PP or PE. Also the tensile of the machines must be precise and the speed must be well adjusted because these materials are breakable in the classic manufacturing processes. To obtain better consequences, the company adjusted the heat and tensile of their machines, installed servo motors on the new machines, and also able to provide Industrial PC installed machines instead of traditional PLC. Industrial PC also has a function that GUR-IS can analyze the condition of the machines remotely. This function allows customers to save maintaining time and cost after-sales. On the other hand, the company also started to manufacture paper bag making machines since 2011, thus GUR-IS plans to be able to serve all kinds of customer demands from plastic bags, biodegradable bags and paper bags with the customized machinery and equipment.
